Husson Women’s Soccer Celebrates 2013 Season
Bangor, ME - The Husson women's soccer team got together for their annual end-of-season banquet at Season's restaurant in Bangor on Wednesday evening. The team enjoyed dinner and an awards ceremony as they looked back on the 2013 season.
The team handed out the following awards during their ceremony:
Golden Ball Award
This award is presented to the player with the highest point total (goals and assists) for the season. Becca Jones (Newmarket, NH), who scored the most goals (6), registered 2 assists, and tied for most points (14) on the 2013 team, was the recipient.
Silver Ball Award
This award is presented to the player with the second highest point total (goals and assists) for the season. The Silver Ball winner was Courtney Hill (Calais, ME), who, with five goals and four assists, tied for most points (14) on team.
Most Valuable Player
This award is presented to the player whose performance on the field is second to none. Sophomore defender Erin Boulier (Bangor, ME) was the recipient. Boulier started and played every minute of all 20 games this year and was a North Atlantic Conference Second Team All-Conference selection.
Rookie of the Year
This award is presented to the most outstanding new player for the season, who made the biggest immediate impact on the field. Co-Rookie of the Year honors were presented to Rachel Moroney (West Bath, ME) and Courtney Hill. Moroney was a tough, consistent performer for the team and named to the 2013 NAC All-Tournament Team. She marked some of the best players Husson faced out of the game. Hill, a former softball standout for Husson, was one of the leading offensive threats for the Eagles in her first year with women's soccer.
This award is presented to the player who doesn't always receive recognition for her efforts, but consistently demonstrates selfless commitment to her team, teammates, and coaches. Representing the driving force of the team, this award is dedicated to a player that continues to work when nobody is looking. The 2013 winner was Marcy Francoeur (Danville, NH). The senior captain, was the hardest worker on the team, period, and made a huge impact on the team as a converted left defender this season, starting in 16 games for the Eagles. Late in the season she struggled with injury, but she showed poise and outstanding leadership.
John P. Boucher 12th Player Award
This award—named in honor of Husson alumnus and athletics supporter John Boucher—is presented to the student-athlete who has unselfishly contributed to the success of the team in a supporting role. Her play off the bench raised the team's level of play. Whitney Cross was the team's first-ever recipient of the new award. Cross found a way to make a difference for the team no matter where she played on the field and appeared in all 20 contests as a senior. She registered 7 points for Husson off three goals and one assist.
The most prestigious of all awards, as voted by the players. The team votes for the player who they look up to, who they respect as a player, and who has given her all to the team on and off the field. The 2013 team overwhelmingly selected Becca Jones as their Players' Player. The senior captain was a 2013 NAC All-Tournament Team selection and is a fourth year Physical Therapy student with an outstanding GPA. Jones was a fabulous role model for both her peers and the underclassmen.
Husson's five seniors—Becca Jones, Marcy Francoeur, Whitney Cross, Courtney Hill, and Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME)—were also recognized and honored at the banquet.
The 2013 team featured 13 new faces on the 25 player roster and had an exciting 11 round penalty kick upset over fourth-seeded New England College in the NAC quarterfinals. Husson women's soccer finished the season 7-11-2, and advanced to the North Atlantic Conference semifinals before falling to the top seed.
