Husson Women's Soccer Stumbles at Castleton
Castleton, VT – Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon, VT) became the all-time leading scorer in Castleton women's soccer history and Hilary Cooke (Marlborough, CT) scored a pair of goals as the Spartans defeated Husson University 3-1 in North Atlantic Conference women's soccer action at Spartan Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Chadburn broke through for the game's first score in the 32nd minute, getting the historic marker off a long pass from the defensive third by MacKenzie Gage (Goshen, NY). Gage played the ball to Chadburn who settled 25 yards out, carried into the box and beat Husson keeper Jessica Poulin (Albion, ME)
Castleton had a great chance to make it 2-0 at the 26:51 mark, but a diving save by Poulin kept it a one-goal contest.
The Spartans applied quick pressure to start the second half, resulting in a trio of corner kicks just three minutes after the interval. Castleton converted on the third as Chadburn played it directly in front of the net, where Cooke touched it past Poulin.
Husson cut the lead in half with 32:05 remaining in the half as Alexandra Laniewski (Scarborough, ME) scored her fourth of the season. Laniewski broke free of the Spartan defense, and was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled in the box. Laniewski's original attempt was turned away by a great effort from Castleton goalie Ericka Davis (Cambridge, VT), but Laniewski corralled the rebound and beat Davis with the second effort.
Cooke made it 3-1 during the 62nd minute, on a right-place, right-time rocket past Poulin. A pass into the box was redirected by an Eagle defender, and Cooke pounced on the fortuitous bounce, scoring from 10 yards out.
Davis made three saves as Castleton upped its overall record to 11-4, while remaining a perfect 6-0 in conference play. Poulin finished with six saves in the loss as Husson falls to 5-9, 4-2.
Castleton is now unbeaten in its last 22 regular season conference contests (21-0-1), outscoring their opponents 92-2 over that span.
Both teams return to action tomorrow at noon as Husson travels to Green Mountain College and Castleton hosts Maine Maritime.
