Eagles Open With A Win

The Husson University women's soccer team recorded a 6-1 win over U. Southern Maine at the John Boucher Field. Senior Shelby Bradford (Lee, ME) registered 2 goals and an assist for the Eagles on the perfect September day. The Eagles peppered the Huskies goal with 41 shots, 26 of them on goal.
Caitlyn Butterfield (Jr., Gorham, ME) scored the first goal of the year off a Penalty Kick. Alexandra Laniewski (So., Scarborough, ME) was tripped up in the box and Butterfield converted the PK 14:00 minutes into the game. Kylan Smith (Sr., Presque Isle, ME) set up the next goal when she stole the ball and fed Megan LaJoie (Jr., Van Buren, ME) in front of the net, giving the Eagles a 2-0 lead at the half.
Bradford scored twice to open the second half giving the Eagles a 4-0 lead ten minutes into the 2nd half. Her first goal was an unassisted effort at 53:13 and then 2:32 later Katie McLaughlin centered a cross which Bradford headed home.
Laniewski, who was active all game, put the Eagles up 5-0 when she tapped home a pass from Katelyn Cloutier (So., Groveton, NH) who received a great through ball from Bradford. Laniewski set Smith up for Husson's final goal when she beat the defender down the right side feeding Smith in front of the net.
U. Southern Maine goalie Alison Bradley (Sr., Auckland, New Zealand) did a good job in goal keeping the score 2-0 at the half. She recorded 10 saves against 22 shots in the first half making numerous diving saves. Catherine Wise (Fy., Cape Elizabeth, ME) scored the lone Huskies goal from an assist by Jessica Gassman (Fy., Kennebunk, ME).
Rozlyn Petersen (Jr., Newport, ME) started in goal for Husson recording 1 save in 81 minutes. Senior Jen Plourde (Howland, ME) finished the game and did not record a save.
Husson is now 1-0 while U. Southern Maine drops to 0-1.
Husson travels to U. Maine Fort Kent on Thursday, September 3 for a 2:00 pm kickoff. U. Maine Southern Maine host Gordon College on Saturday, September 5 at 12:00 pm.
