Husson Drops NAC Match to Mariners

Bangor, ME – In Saturday's North Atlantic Conference (NAC) women's basketball action, Husson lost to Maine Maritime, 72-64. With the loss, Husson stands at 2-2 (1-1 NAC), while Maine Maritime stands at 3-3 (1-1 NAC).

In what proved to be an extremely physical match, the first half went back-and-forth, with both teams remaining within five points of one another for the first ten minutes of the game. Husson created a little cushion for themselves when Denae Johnson (Bangor, ME) assisted a Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, ME) three-pointer to put the Eagles up 20-12. Minutes later, a Samira Cruz (Orlando, FL) three put Husson up 29-18. Maine Maritime closed the lead to 5 at 29-24 off an Ashley Shine (Springfield, MO) free throw followed by a two Kari Jones (Nobleboro, ME) free throws and a Hanna Lyons (Scarborough, ME) jumper to bring it to 29-28. Cruz responded with two free throws of her own for the Eagles, and the team carried a 35-29 lead into the half.

At halftime, Cruz had a game-high 10 points for Husson. McIntyre had 9 of her own, and Rebecca Young (Concord, VT) had 4 rebounds. Shine had a team-high 9 points for the Mariners, and Lyons followed her with 8 points. Rebekah Campbell (Corinth, ME) had 4 rebounds.

The second half started out as close as the first, with the Eagles and Mariners tied 37-37 three minutes in. Maine Maritime took a 46-42 lead in the middle of the half off a Lyons layup, and increased it to 54-44 off a Kristi Willey (Topsham, ME) three-pointer. The Mariners maintained their lead throughout the half. Gab Duke (Rockport, ME) made a layup with just over a minute on the clock to decrease the Mariners lead to five, at 63-68, but the Eagles ran out of time and dropped a final result of 72-64.

Coach Walker said of the match, "Today was a battle of the fouls, and it never felt like we found any offensive rhythm, continuity, or flow."

Chandler Guerette (Presque Isle, ME) finished as the Eagles' leading scorer with 17 points on the day. McIntyre finished the day in double digits with 12 points, and Cruz scored 10. Young and Katy Brochu (Bangor, ME) were the top rebounders for Husson with six apiece.

Shine had a 13-point second half for the Mariners and finished the day with 22. Teammates Jones and Lyons put up 22 and 14 points. Campbell had a game-high 9 rebounds, and Leah Jackson (Dedham, ME) grabbed 8 more.

The Eagles will travel to Green Mountain and Castleton to continue NAC play next weekend, and the Mariners will do the same.
