Eagle Lacrosse Falls at Castleton

Castleton, VT – Castleton State College used a 6-1 run during the decisive third period to turn a one-goal lead into a 17-12 win over Husson University in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) men's lacrosse action Saturday evening at Spartan Stadium.

Chris Pelletier (Rome, Maine) cut the Husson deficit to 9-8 just over a minute into the second half, but two-straight from Alex Brands (Woodstock, Vt.) and A.J. Groot (Canadaigua, N.Y.) pushed the lead to three just over two minutes later. Mitch Heaps (York, Pa.) brought the Eagles back to within two at 11-9, but the Spartans reeled off the next four goals to end the period, and the first two of the fourth to put the game out of reach at 17-9 with five minutes remaining.

Seven different Spartans scored during the pivotal stretch, including a pair from Groot.

Castleton raced out to a 5-1 lead after the first period as Nohea King (St. Albans, Vt.) potted three goals to lead the way.

The Eagles answered the bell to start the second half, reeling off six-straight goals to grab a 7-5 lead with four minutes remaining before halftime. Ben Landry (Lewiston, Maine) caught fire, scoring four goals while Pelletier had a pair.

Two quick strikes from Phil Patterson (Essex, Vt.), set up perfectly by Groot on both occasions tied the score at 7-7 with just over a minute left and Davidson gave Castleton the lead for good with 47 seconds left. 

Landry led the Eagles with six goals, while Nick Brown (Fort Worth, Texas) had two goals and an assist to follow Pelletier's three markers.

King finished with a team-high six points on four goals and two assists, while Davidson finished with four scores and Groot ended with two goals and two assists.

Even throughout, Castleton held a 37-33 edge in shots, while Husson won 17-of-32 faceoffs.

Dillon Shaw (Augusta, Maine) went 15-for-28 in the faceoff circle and collected a game-high eight ground balls for the Eagles, while Brad Barber (Napean, Ont.) was 15-for-30 with a team-leading five ground balls for Castleton.

Eric Horsfield (Tolland, Conn.) made eight saves in the win, while Husson starter John Hooper III (Wakefield, R.I.) stopped four shots before being lifted in favor of Eric Lund (Mansfield, Mass.) who stopped three over the final 23 minutes.

Husson falls to 7-6, 3-1 Castleton improves to 6-7, 5-1 while  Castleton improves to 6-7, 5-1. Both teams return to action tomorrow at noon as the Eagles travel to Green Mountain while the Spartans host Maine Maritime Academy.
