Husson Can't Catch Cadets

Bangor, ME - The Husson University men's lacrosse team had less than twenty four hours to turn around play their second game this weekend, and on Sunday they were not able to get their offense going, falling to the Norwich University Cadets by a final score of 10-1. With the loss, Husson falls to 3-4 on the season while Norwich leaves Bangor with their first win of 2012, bringing their record to 1-2.

The Eagles' only goal of the game came on an unassisted effort by Nick Brown (Ft. Worth, TX) with 10:38 remaining in the first quarter. Defensively, Mark Nardelli (Norwood, MA) continued his solid sophomore season, causing  three turnovers and picking up a team-high eight ground balls, first year LSM Jon Sullivan (Rutland, VT) matched him with three CTs of his own. In goal, senior John Hooper III (Wakefield, RI) allowed 9 goals while saving 11 of the 20 shots he saw while being handed the loss.

As a team, Husson out-shot their opponents 34-30, with 12 of those coming in the fourth quarter as the Eagles tried to put some more goals on the board near the end. The Eagles were 74% on their clears (17-23) while allowing the Cadets to clear the zone on 18-24 chances for 75%. The biggest margin was at the faceoff dot where Norwich held a staggering 3-12 advantage on the draws. Norwich also held an advantage on the ground, winning 43 ground balls compared to 39 by Husson.

For Norwich, they were led by sophomore midfielder Patrick Tommins (Fairfield, CT) who finished the day with four goals and an assist for five points on the day. Patrick Sikora (Montpelier, VT) and Seth Fuller (Wheaton, IL) each had four points in the game as Sikora scored three with an assist, while Fuller was the facilitator, chipping in with four helpers and a goal of his own. In the cage, sophomore goalie Mark Paradiso (Westford, MA) came up huge, allowing just the one goal while making 14 saves in the game to pick up his first win so far.

The Cadets got things started just over a minute and a half into the game when Marco Wiederanders (Denver, CO) scored an unassisted tally to kick off the scoring. Husson would answer nearly three minutes later when Brown found the back of the net to level the score at one apiece.

Norwich started to make some separation later in the period, when Tommins found Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, MD) to take the lead for the Cadets. They followed that up a minute and twenty seconds later when Fuller scored from Sikora at 8:19 to give Norwich a 4-1 advantage. The Cadets finished off the first quarter scoring with just over a minute to go, when Fuller assisted Tommins to give Norwich a 5-1 edge after the opening stanza.

In the second quarter, the Cadets wasted little time to get back on the board when defenseman Josh Menge (Hagaman, NY) picked up the ball in transition and found Tommins for the score with 14:27 to go in the half. Norwich added another a few minutes later when Sikora got on the board with an unassisted tally at 10:16, and finished the first half scoring less than a minute later when Tommins completed the hat trick off a fuller assist and it was 7-1 at the end of the half.

In the fourth quarter, Norwich added three more in the third quarter to finish the game scoring. Sikora netted two more, the first unassisted and the second from Fuller. Tommins potted the final score on a man-up goal assisted by Wiederanders with a minute to go in the third. That was it for scoring, as the game went final 10-1 in favor of the visiting Cadets.

The Eagles will have the middle of the week off before traveling to Farmington for their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener against the Beavers on Saturday the 24th beginning at 1:00 pm. The Cadets travel to Plattsburgh State for a 6:00 pm start on Wednesday the 21st.
