Norwich Outlasts Husson

Portland, ME – The Cadets of Norwich University outlasted the Eagles tonight to earn the victory 7-5 over Husson in a game played at Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium. Ben Landry (Lewiston, ME) picked up a hat-trick for the Eagles, while he and Mitch Heaps (Felton, PA) who netted two, and set up one of Landry's scores, led the team with 3 points apiece. Marco Wiederaenders (Denver, CO) had two goals to lead Norwich who saw 6 different scorers on the night.

Norwich jumped out to the early lead with 3 in a row to start the game, before Heaps converted on a man-up opportunity to put the Eagles on the board with 5:55 left to go in the first quarter. Nate Fortezzo (Branford, CT) won the ensuing face-off and bolted down the field to answer with a goal of his own just 6 seconds later, giving Norwich the edge 4-1 which they took in to the 2nd. Norwich scored twice in the second quarter for the only tallies, giving the Cadets a 6-1 lead going into halftime.

In the second half, Husson fought back, first cutting into the lead with Landry's first on a man-up opportunity with 8:42 left in the third quarter. Heaps picked up his second three minutes later to bring the Eagles to within 3. Both teams traded goals in the final two minutes of the quarter, Norwich struck first on a goal from Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, MD), then nearly a minute later while down a man, Heaps assisted Landry making the score 7-4 going into the final stanza.

Husson never gave in during the 4th, getting a man-up goal with 13:11 left in regulation on an in-tight finish from Landry set up by a full-field clear and deft assist from Mark Nardelli (Norwood, MA). The Eagles finished the game 3-8 with the extra man, while Norwich squandered all 8 of their attempts. Husson won the battle for ground balls picking up 38-33 over the Cadets, Matt Tabler (Catonsville, MD) finished the game with 4 ground balls and forced 3 turnovers to help keep Husson in the game late, but they weren't able to close the gap and the score would go final.

The Eagles take the field again on Saturday at 1:00 pm when they host St. Joseph's at Boucher Field. Norwich resumes play on Saturday when they travel to UMass Dartmouth.
