Eagles Stay Perfect With Convincing Win Over Terriers

Bangor, ME – The Husson University men's basketball team defeated the Thomas College Terriers in a North Atlantic Conference matchup by a final score of 89-62. With the win, the Husson Eagles improve to a perfect 5-0 (1-0 in conference) on the season, while Thomas falls to 0-4 (0-1).

The Eagles stormed out to a quick 10-0 lead, and never looked back. The Terriers scored a few baskets of their own to make it 10-6, but that was the closest they would come. Both teams were very aggressive in attacking the basket, combining for 17 total fouls. Both teams shot a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line. Husson shot 49% from the field, including 33% from beyond the arc in the first half, while the Terriers shot 45% from the floor, but could only muster one three-pointer on 6 attempts.

The Eagles closed out the half with a big buzzer beating 3-pointer by Mike Gonzales (Fort Washington, MD) to give Husson the momentum heading into the locker room, and expanded their lead to double digits at 46-35. Brooks Spaulding (Fairfield, ME) had a huge half for the Eagles, tallying 12 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor to go along with a perfect 4-4 from the line. Phil Leighton (Naples, ME) also had a big half for Husson, adding a very balanced 7 points, 3 assists, 4 rebounds and 1 steal. Eric Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) led the way for Thomas, with 10 points at the break, shooting a perfect 4-4 and hitting both his free throw attempts.

The Eagles began to slowly pull away in the second half, and Thomas was forced to use two quick timeouts almost on back to back possessions, the second which came after Dan Fleming (Fairfield, ME) put home a layup off of a flashy pass from Donte Cottonham (Silver Spring, MD) to make it 70-53 in favor of Husson.

Spaulding came to life following the Terriers two timeouts, with back to back posterizing dunks on the next two Eagles' possessions, forcing Thomas to take another timeout to gather themselves. Then on the next possession, Spaulding recorded a steal, and almost slammed home a third straight dunk off an alley-oop attempt from Leighton, but was fouled on the process. He went on to hit both free throws to give him a 20 point night and counting with over six and a half minutes to go in the game.

Thomas struggled to find the open looks for the rest of the game, and the Eagles pulled away late, leading by as much as 30 points.

For the Eagles, Spaulding led the way with a game-high 23 points, and tallied 6 rebounds. Jacob Moore (Hampden, ME) added 11 points and 9 boards, and Aaron Willis (New York, NY) chipped in with 10 points and a few ridiculous crossovers for good measure.

For the Terriers, Westbrooks led the team with 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Levi Barnes (Skowhegan, ME) and Garen Manzo (Millinocket, ME) each added 13 points respectfully.

Head Coach Warren Caruso had this to say of his team's impressive win: "These conference games are always different than your non-conference games, a little more physical usually. We did a nice job in the second half playing with better energy. Overall, it was a good step in the right direction."

The undefeated Husson Eagles host Maine Maritime Academy this Saturday December 7th at 1:00 PM in another NAC contest as part of Hall of Fame Weekend 2013. Thomas College will host the Lyndon State Hornets Friday December 6th at 5:30 PM.
