Golf Tees Off

The Husson University golf team tees off their season Tuesday, September 7 at the Thomas Terrier Invitational being played at Natanis Country Club. The Eagles return 4 members of the program who traveled to the NCAA III National Tournament a year ago. New Co-Head Coaches Jason Harvey and Ed Meo have a talented group back and seek their fourth straight NAC title and trip to the NCAA III Tournament.
Leading the Eagles this season will be Kevin Byrne (Jr., Winslow, ME), John Ellis (Sr, Belfast, ME) Mike Hersey (So., Presque Isle, ME), and Matt Loubier (So, Winslow, ME), all made the trip to the NCAA III National in May. The four veterans averaged below 80 last season. Also returning to the program will be Ben Estabrook (Sr., Bangor, ME) who did not play in the spring. Russell Gamble (Fy., Bangor, ME) and Christopher Petrin (Fy., Biddeford, ME) round out the 2009 roster.
Husson qualified for the NCAA III National Tournament last season by winning the NAC title. Their two day total of 631 was good for a 13 stroke victory over 2nd place Castleton State College with a 644. Last season, the Eagles won 10 straight tournaments before finishing 2nd in the NEIGA (New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Tournament). Their team scoring average for the year was 302.87, ranking the Eagles 2nd in North East and 25th in the country.
The Eagles have won four NEIGA titles (2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005) and five straight Maine Collegiate Championships. They will play in both events again this season. In all, Husson will participate in 9 tournaments this fall. The Eagles will host the NAC Championships at Penobscot Valley Country Club on Saturday, September 11 and 12.
