Bangor, ME – The Husson offense exploded in their second game in the 2011 NEAC East Division playoffs for a 10-4 victory over the Castleton State Spartans. Castleton jumped out to a 2 run lead in the first inning, but the Eagles battled back for a run in the top of the 2nd, 3 runs in the top of the 4th, and scored another in the 5th to take a 5-2 lead. The Spartans got two more in the bottom of inning to bring it back to within one, but Husson put up 5 unanswered insurance runs en route to securing the victory.
Nate Adams (Frankfort, ME) went the distance to continue his dominance on the hill in the 2011 season. Adams let up just two earned runs over his 9 innings of work, scattering 6 hits and a base on balls while striking out 3. The Eagle offense backed him up with 10 runs on 13 hits, led by left fielder Kyle Vanidestine (Bangor, ME) who went 3-5 at the dish with two runs scored and an RBI. Jake Arthers (Belfast, ME) continued to swing a hot bat in the playoffs picking up 2 RBI on the day to give him 5 in two postseason games. Shawn Smith (Winterport, ME) crossed the plate three times for the Eagles, while Chris Maguire (Orland, ME) and Tom Crews (Bangor, ME) each had a pair of RBI as well for Husson.
Castleton's starter Seth Harrington (Bennington, VT) pitched well despite picking up the loss, going 7 strong for the Spartans, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits and two walks with 7 strikeouts. The Castleton offense was led by Matt Eisenhuth (So. Newfane, VT), who went 2-4 at the plate, scoring twice and knocking in another. Designated Hitter Ryan Zelinski (Schenectady, NY) also scored a pair while going 2-4 out of the leadoff spot, but he and Eisenhuth were the only Spartans to record multiple hits, and were among just 4 Castleton players to put numbers in the hit column.
With the loss, the Spartans will have to return to the diamond at 6:00 pm in a rematch with Thomas who won their contest over University of Maine at Farmington this morning. Husson advances to the championship game of the NEAC East Division Tournament where they will take on the winner of tonight's game.
