Newman Athletic Facility/Gymnasium
The Newman Athletic Facility/Gymnasium was one
of the original structures built on the property when Husson moved
to its current Bangor location in 1968. Named after William Newman,
an original Husson trustee and a prominent Maine banker, this
facility has served the students, faculty and community very well
for over 30 years. The maple floor and bleacher seating of 1,200 in
the gymnasium have served as the home court for
the volleyball, and men's and women's basketball teams. Newman
Gym's interior has recieved a facelift of sorts heading into the
2009-2010 seasons as the original floor was painted with a new
design and refinished along with the installation of new
scoreboards.
Attached to the gymnasium is the Webber Pool (shown below). The
Webber Pool is a 25 yard, six-lane, competitive
pool. This pool is used by Husson students for recreation and
injury rehabilitation, as well as by faculty and members of the
gym, and this year, will be home base for the new Husson Women's
Swim Team. The Bangor High Rams also call the Webber Pool their
home during the winter swimming and diving seasons. The Webber Pool
has been host to over 30 Bangor High School state championship
squads in boys and girl's swimming. Balcony seating for over 500
spectators makes this facility one of the finest in the Eastern
Maine area.
Also located at the Newman Athletic Facility is the Clara Swan Center, which houses two health-based facilities for student use: The Kenduskeag Institute is a high-tech laboratory that allows for testing athletic endurance and kinesiology for the Physical Education and Physical Therapy departments. The Richard and Alice Trott Fitness Center is a state-of-the-art fitness center that allows Husson students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to train with some of the finest free-weight and machine equipment available. The Swan Center was generously funded, in part by Alice and Richard Trott.
The Newman Athletic Facility also has locker room facilities, a steam room, a trainer's room, additional weight room for student athletes, batting cage, and equipment for all of Husson's Athletic teams as well as offices for each coach and the Athletic Administration.
The D. Bruce MacGregor, Hall of Fame room also calls the Newman Athletic Facility its home. The MacGregor Hall of Fame room was named after legendary coach and instructor at Husson, D. Bruce MacGregor. The Hall of Fame room serves many purposes for the University, including meetings, ceremonies and also serves as host to the inductees in the Husson University Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame room was generously funded by Nicole and Warren Caruso, both Husson graduates.
