Women's Soccer Wins Fourth Straight NAC Title
Castleton, VT - Megan Clement (Brunswick, ME) scored a goal and
assisted on another as Husson University defeated Castleton State
College 3-1 in the 2009 North Atlantic Conference women's soccer
championship at Spartan Stadium. With the win, the Eagles
will return to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth consecutive
year. Kylan Smith (Sr., Presque Isle, ME) was named the NAC
Tournament's most valuable player.
Clement served a perfect corner kick in the 11th minute of play and
Amy Sanz (Tyngsboro, MA) was able to get enough leg on it to
redirect it past the dive of Castleton keeper Erick Davis
(Cambridge, VT) to break a scoreless tie. The corner was set up
after Kelly Tetreault (Tolland, CT) blocked a Shelby Bradford (Lee,
ME) shot that appeared destined to find the inside of the near
post. Clement scored what proved to be the game winner 19 minutes
later, when Bradford lofted a pass over the defense and Clement one
touched it over the outstretched hand of Davis.
Castleton nearly stole the early momentum when, in the fifth minute
of play, NAC Player of the Year Courtney Chadburn (North Clarendon,
VT) found herself on the back side of the defense thanks to a pass
from Ashley Ledoux (Swanton, VT). Caitlyn Butterfield (Gorham, ME)
came from the weak side to make a phenomenal tackle, and extinguish
the threat. After the first Eagle goal, Ledoux and Castleton
pressed, nearly finding the equalizer on two different occasions.
The first came on another Ledoux serve to freshman Megan Blongy
(Rutland, VT) Blongy one touched it just high over the cross bar
from four-yards out. The second came when Ledoux took a direct kick
from 20 yards out, and struck it off the near side post. Courtney
Ethier (Portsmouth, RI) struck a rocket on the rebound, but Sanz
was there to block the shot and send it away from the goal. With
13:20 remaining Butterfield broke up yet another Ledoux-to-Chadburn
attempt, and Ledoux rocked the crossbar with 2:40 remaining in the
half to keep the score 2-0 entering intermission.
Husson struck first in the second half as Alexandra Laniewski
(Scarborough, ME) notched an unassisted tally from the left corner
of the penalty box, just inside the far post. Husson nearly made it
4-0 three minutes later, but Davis was able to punch away a
crossing pass off from another Clement corner kick. The Eagles
attempted eight corner kicks to Castleton's one, and nearly
converted on better than half, had it not been from some solid work
by Davis.
For the game Plourde stopped seven shots on net while the freshman
Davis turned away four for Castleton. The contest was yet another
dandy, in a rivalry that has grown over the last decade. The Eagles
now hold a 6-4-1 advantage over the last nine seasons, including a
pair of wins in conference tournament play.
With the win Husson improves to 15-5-0 overall and advances to the
2009 NCAA Division III National Tournament.

NCAA tournament. Miguel Dominguez (Jr., Rome, GA) was

resulted in a goal by Gavin Madden. Madden was assisted by
Justin Gauvin (Sr., Woolwich, ME). Castleton answered with a
goal of their own with 4:30 left in the first half.
Castleton's Jacob Roswell (Fy., White River Jct., VT) netted the
goal after collecting Corey Robbins' (Sr., Barre, VT) rebounded
shot in the Husson goal box. Castleton and Husson would enter
halftime tied at 1-1.
At the 66:37 minute mark, Husson was awarded a penalty kick.
Alex Martin (So., Van Buren, ME) scored off of a low-left shot to
give Husson a 2-1 lead. Ten minutes later, Husson's
John DeSteffano (Fy., Auburn, NH) scored off of a set piece that
was taken by James Crockford (Fy., Watford, England) to bring the
score to 3-1.
Castleton's goalkeeper, Mike Anthony (Sr., Dartmouth, MA) made a
tremendous second half diving save on James Crockford's shot to
keep the Spartans hopes alive (Fy., Watford, England).
Husson's Miguel Dominguez (Jr., Rome, GA) also made a huge late
second half save deflecting a Nick Johnas (So., Niskayuna, NY)
header off of Greg Klopfer's (Sr., Voorheesville, NY) corner
kick. On the day, Anthony tallied 8 saves on 19 shots while

Field Hockey Wins NAC Championship Over U. Maine
Farmington
FARMINGTON, Maine -- Fourth-seeded Husson University claimed the
North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey Championship with a 2-0 win
over third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington today at
Prescott Field. With the win, the Eagles will enter the NCAA
Tournament. Lorri Hiltz (So., Norridgewock, ME) was named
most valuable player of the NAC Tournament.
The Eagles (9-7) -- winners of seven in a row -- receive the NAC's
automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Beavers
finished their season at 10-8.
Kajsa Blindow (Morgan, VT) and Skye Ellis (Belfast, ME) each scored
a first-half goal for Husson. Blindow's tally came off a penalty
corner with a pass by Lorri Hiltz (Norridgewock, ME) making its way
through the defense with Blindow knocking it into the empty goal at
4:58. Ellis scored off a long cross through the circle by Courtney
Allen (Gardiner, ME) at 30:01 for the 2-0 advantage.
The two scores were more than enough for the Eagle defense.
Spirited by the likes of Helen Berry (Belfast, ME), Diann Ramsey
(Otisfield, ME) and Caroline Bochtler (Turner, ME), the Beavers
were limited to one shot on goal by Emma Deans (Gorham, ME), which
was turned back by Husson goalkeeper Kristen Capen (Leeds, ME).
The Eagles outshot Farmington 7-5, but the visitors fired six shots
on goal. The Beavers took eight corners to Husson's four. Six of
the Beavers' corners came in the opening half.
Capen recorded one save for the Eagles.
Sarah Brown (Windham, ME) collected four saves for Farmington.
In her first year as Head Coach, Katie Flaherty has led the team to
a season ending seven straight victories to claim the North
Atlantic Conference Championship and earn a trip to the NCAA
Tournament. Flaherty credits the young team that pulled
together down the back stretch of the season with a fighting spirit
that increased their goal scoring ability and shored up their
defense. The NCAA Tournament match up will be announced early
in the week.
