Women's Soccer Wins Third Straight Title

Bangor, ME – Husson won their third straight NAC title with a 2-1 win over U. Maine Farmington at John Boucher Field. Tournament MVP Shelby Bradford (Jr, Lee, ME) had both goals to pace the Eagles to the win.

After a scoreless first half, Husson came out strong to start the second half. Bradford found the net just :41 into the second half. She received a throw in just outside the box and carried it by the defender, firing a low shot just under Mckell Barnes (So, Durham, ME).

One minute later it appeared the Katie Nickerson (Sr, Belfast, ME) had put the Eagles up 2-0 but the goal was waived off because of a hand ball. Bradford found the net 5:52 into the half, off a pass from Samantha Homer (Jr, Charlton, MA). Bradford received the pass at the top of the box and found the top right corner.

The Beavers made a late push as Amber Murphy (Jr, Manchester, NH) took a pass from Julie Walters (Sr, Wells, ME) and shot it past Tatyana Wolterbeek (Sr, Wells, ME) making it 2-1 with 2 minutes to play.

Wolterbeek finished with 3 saves against 7 shots while Barnes had 9 saves against 21 shots.

Husson moves to 15-4 on the season while U. Maine Farmington finishes at 10-8.

Tournament MVP was Shelby Bradford. The 2008 NAC Women’s Soccer All-Tournament team; Green Mountain – Monique Conture and Karin Bellimare, Castleton State – Carisa Chadburn and Katie Hoxsie, U. Maine Farmington – Julie Walters, Katie Schwarz, and Amanda Byrne, Husson University – Kylan Smith, Katie Nickerson, and Samantha Homer.

Husson advances to the NCAA III National Tournament for the 4th time in six years. The Ealges will learn their seeding on Monday, November 9th.

 

Golf Wins Third Straight Title

Rutland, VT-Husson University won its third-consecutive North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men's Golf Championship, scoring 312 during round two for a two-day total of 631 (319, 312) at the Rutland Country Club. Host Castleton State College finished second with a two-day total of 644 (320, 324).

Castleton's Michael Krahn fired a two-day total of 155 (78,77) to earn medalist honors for the tournament. Husson played consistently throughout the tournament, taking four of the next five positions in the tournament. Husson's Chris Hamel finished one stroke behind Krahn at
156 (80, 76), while teammates Ben Estabrook and Kevin Byrne followed with 157 (80, 77) and 158 (80, 78) respectively. Eric Slosek rounded out the top-five for Castleton with a 159 (81, 78) and Husson's John Ellis (79, 81) finished sixth.

University of Maine-Farmington rebounded after a tough first round to finish third at 664 (345, 319). Andy Farrell was a big part of Farmington's success, carding a tournament-low 73 on day two. Farrell finished tied for seventh place at 181 for the tournament with Castleton's Alex Moore (80, 81).

Maine Maritime Academy took home fourth place at 695 (342, 353) just edging out Thomas College's 699 (348, 351). Green Mountain College rounded out the field of six with a 912 (458, 454).

Men's Basketball Captures Title

WATERVILLE, Maine—The Husson Eagles overtook the Thomas College Terriers 73-60 behind 25 points from Tournament MVP Matt MacKenzie (Jr., Warren, ME) on Saturday afternoon and claimed the North Atlantic Conference Championship.

The first half of action was back and forth, featuring five ties and eleven different lead changes. However, the Eagles would outscore the Terriers 41-27 behind a 15-3 scoring run that would come very late in the second half. The Eagles’ defense would hold the Terriers to just 29% shooting on the afternoon, while the Eagles themselves would shoot 44.3% in the game.

MacKenzie led all scorers with his 25 points on 10-18 shooting from the field for Husson. He would also pull down 11 rebounds in the contest for the double-double. Jay Urhin (So., Winterport, ME) and Nick Perras (Sr., Lancaster, NH), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, would each contribute 13 points for the victorious Eagles.

Thomas was led by Andrew Duncanson (So., Portland, ME) who would tally 17 points on the afternoon, while also being named to the All-Tournament Team. Shawn Rodgers (Fr., Philadelphia, PA) would score 11 points and grab 11 rebounds for the Terriers, while teammate Isaiah Brathwaite (So., Farmington, ME) would also score 11 points.

The Eagles improved to 16-11 on the year and will look forward to the NCAA Division III Tournament, while Thomas ends their season with a 15-11 record.
