Top Moment: UMPI Tournament
Saturday, September 14th had the potential to be a big day for the Husson University women's volleyball team, with three matches scheduled against out-of-conference opponents.
It would end up going as well as it possibly could have, as the Eagles would take all three matches they played in at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Husson would first need a comeback to conquer the UMaine Machias Clippers, in a greatly contested five-set match (25-8, 24-26, 20-25, 25-16, 16-14).
The Eagles would then take on the host UMPI Owls, and sweep them in straight sets (25-15, 25-10, 25-12).
The final match of the day for Husson came against the Unity College Rams, where the Eagles would complete the undefeated afternoon with a tough four set victory (26-24, 25-17, 22-25, 25-19).
In the match with UMaine Machias, Husson routed the Clippers in game one but lost by close scores in games two and three. The Eagles had to grind out a tough 25-16 victory in game four to force a fifth and deciding set, which would end by the slimmest of margins in favor of Husson at 16-14.
Alexandra deHertogh (Cumberland, RI) put away 12 kills on 18 attacks to lead the Eagles against the Clippers, while Lindsay Chapman (Gorham, ME) added nine, and Kristen Atwood (Cumberland, ME) had eight. Freshman libero Kara Graham (East Machias, ME) amassed 28 digs in the match, while Chapman had 19 of her own.
The second match of the day would prove to be a much easier task for the Eagles, as they won the battle of the birds by sweeping the UMPI Owls.
UMPI never scored more than 15 points in any of the three games, as Husson's offense was in control the entire way. The Eagles combined for a solid .262 hitting average, led by Chapman who hit a devastating .769 with 10 kills in 13 attacks with no errors.
Emma Plouffe (Frankfort, NY) contributed seven kills for Husson, while Casey Lopes (New Bedford, MA) handed out 20 assists and picked up 11 digs.
In the third and final contest of the day, Husson would complete their great afternoon with a hard-fought four set victory against Unity.
Atwood led the Husson offensive attack in this match with nine kills, while deHertogh added eight kills and three solo blocks. Lopes ran a great offense for the Eagles, dishing out 24 assists, while Chapman contributed with 27 digs and 4.5 total blocks (two solo).
"We had a good day today, which is great especially after a couple of tough losses early in the week", Husson head coach Jodie Fairbank said after the matches.
"The girls really battled in the games against Machias," she added, "and the last match against Unity was tough, but the girls played well together."
